Faculty Council: Engineering and IT Nominee
I am excited to apply for a position on the Faculty Council as a representative for the Faculty of Engineering and IT at the Graduate Student Association, University of Melbourne. With a strong academic background, leadership experience, and a passion for student advocacy, I am eager to contribute meaningfully to this role.
Graduate researchers face several pressing challenges, including lab closures, strained lab relations, inadequate university funding for research, outdated researcher server sizes, and a reduction in dedicated workspaces. These issues directly impact productivity and the quality of research outcomes. While concerns have been raised, I believe a more proactive and coordinated student voice is essential to drive meaningful change. This has motivated me to step forward and advocate for my peers.
I have actively contributed to student leadership, serving as an executive committee member of the Graduates’ Infrastructure Engineering Society (GIES) and a committee member of the Sri Lankan Graduates’ Society (SLGS). These roles have allowed me to organise initiatives that foster engagement and build community. Additionally, my leadership skills strengthens my ability to represent student interests effectively.
I look forward to bringing my experience and enthusiasm to the Faculty Council, ensuring that student voices are heard and valued.
