GSA strongly opposes the proposed Federal Government placing caps on the number of international students allowed to study in Australia and at the University of Melbourne.
International students are a crucial part of the graduate student community. The caps being implemented by the government will have a significant impact on all graduate students. The University of Melbourne is currently evaluating the effects and consequences of the caps, which will affect all of the higher education sector.
Once the full impact of the caps on the University are better understood GSA may need to make some operational changes to ensure we can continue meeting graduate student’s needs efficiently and effectively into the future with the available resources. GSA is committed to our continued support of international graduate students.
We understand that this is a particularly difficult and confusing time for international graduate students. We note that the caps will not apply to students who are currently enrolled in graduate degrees, graduate researchers (PhD and Masters by Research students), or students in Australia on a study abroad program.
Some answers to commonly asked questions are available for current and prospective students at the University of Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne also offers free, confidential and short-term access to Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS) for students wanting to access mental health support.
