Alexander Tofler Disability and Equity Officer
(he/him)
Hello! I’m Alexander, an international adoptee pursuing my Juris Doctor degree at the University of Melbourne. With lived experience, a background in Nursing from the University of Sydney, and extensive experience in disability support work, I am deeply committed to advocating for the rights and inclusion of students with long-term physical, intellectual, psychiatric, sensory, neurological, learning disabilities as well as persistent chronic illnesses.
As the Disability and Equity Officer, my vision is to expand community-building opportunities for disabled students, promote inclusive university policies, and ensure accessibility is at the forefront of all GSA initiatives. I am passionate about fostering a supportive and equitable environment where students feel valued and empowered to reach their full potential. I have three main goals I want to achieve:
- I plan to organise more events and social initiatives, particularly for students with disability.
- I will introduce a Buddy Program to provide peer support for students with disabilities, building on the work of my predecessor.
- I am committed to establishing minimum accessibility guidelines for all GSA events and communications to ensure inclusivity.
- Establish a working group of people with lived experience of disability and chronic illness to inform policy and better direct GSAs activities.
I am eager to continue learning from our graduate community’s diverse experiences and work collaboratively to create a more inclusive university experience for all.
