Board Member:
“Together, we can make this university a place where every student—no matter background, gender or identity—feels seen, heard, valued and respected for who we are.”
I am Luis Barra Garcia, a Latin gay man from Chile, passionate about global communications, cultures, politics, economics and languages. Throughout my career, I have developed a profound cultural sensitivity and awareness in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. As a member of the LGBTIQA+ community, I appreciate and respect the rich heritage and contemporary contributions of these communities.
I am eager to collaborate and listen to your ideas to create an open dialogue. I am currently pursuing a Master of Global Media Communications and a Diploma in French at The University of Melbourne.
My professional experience includes roles in the media, corporate and hospitality sectors, developing a comprehensive understanding of communication practices, covering diverse areas such as Operations, Health and Safety, Human Resources, Legal, Commercial, Finances and Technology.
I aim to encourage participation, advocate for fellow students and organise agendas that reflect the student community’s needs.
Queer Officer:
“I am deeply committed to ensuring that our voices, our issues and our achievements are celebrated through real action. Together, we can make Unimelb a place where every student—no matter background, gender or identity—feels seen, heard, valued, treated equally and respected for who we are”.
I am a gay latin man with a long journey of personal growth and self-discovery like yours!
Our community is facing significant challenges, we must act.
– We must act for those considering gender transition fearing immediate expulsion from home, providing gendered housing options and safe spaces like university dormitories, bathrooms and changing rooms.
– We must act for those living in isolation, facing discrimination and navigating gender affirmation, suffering from mental health issues, a limited number of counselling sessions is not enough for each personal journey.
– We must act for all students who need sexual medical assistance, bringing effective and efficient sexual health check-ups to campus.
I embrace this opportunity to advocate for your inclusivity and celebrate your diversity.
Faculty of Arts:
“I am deeply committed to enhancing student experiences and life in areas like advocacy, support, community, financial aid, professional development and promoting cultural diversity as your Arts Faculty representative for GSA.”
I am currently pursuing a Master of Global Media Communications and a Diploma in French. Also, I am serving as a co-chair of the Graduate Forum of our faculty, fostering inclusive conversations to our needs. I am confident that my academic background, practical experience and commitment to our community will enable me to successfully be your representative.
