2020 Art Prize
The GSA Art Prize is an annual event as part of our Engaged and Healthy Communities mandate. This event champions creativity and reflects the diversity of students’ interests outside their area of study.
2020 has been a year like no other, and it is the first time the Art Prize has been held virtually. The theme of the competition this year is: Travel – what sparks your wanderlust? Where have you been? Where do you want to go? We can travel to places real or imaginary.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this is the first year GSA has run the annual Art Prize virtually. This year’s entries showcase how students creatively connect with their own world.

First Prize
‘GUNBALANYA DREAMING’

Each year I spend several months in Arnhem Land on PhD fieldwork and volunteer vet work. COVID-19 has put a stop to it all this year – we need to protect the communities. I miss the country, the animals and the people I’ve come to know as family. Sitting at my desk at home I dream of Gunbalanya.

‘ROAD TRIP AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL’

I moved alone to Australia to study so my friends and housemates have very much become extensions of my family here, especially through COVID-19. We’re (poorly) planning a haphazard road trip the second we’re allowed to cross state borders and my hope is the trip goes something like this.

‘PETROL STATION IN MONGOLIA’

I came across this petrol station when travelling in rural Mongolia. Although it was nothing glamorous, I felt very content and tranquil there; I was reminded of Edward Hopper and his themes of solitude and aloneness, portrayed without negativity.

Travel for a fact is “cherishing the moment”. In our current situation which is as close to static, my imagination serves my wanderlust. While mind vividly glides like water all over my fantasy my pencil attempts to capture the moment. You can be restricted, but the 86 mil neurons in you are not!
