An update from the GSA President: September 1st 2025

Dear Graduate Students,

I’m pleased to share that the 2025 Graduate Art Prize was a great success last Friday evening. Congratulations to all our winners, with a special mention to First Prize recipient Georgia Boseley. Thank you to our panel of judges, including GSA’s own Nila Shekarvand who leads Art Class with Nila, and to our chief guest, Prof. Michael Wesley. Most of all, thank you to the graduate students whose creativity and talent made the night truly memorable.

The Graduate Art Prize is an annual celebration of diverse graduate stories and perspectives from across all disciplines, highlighting the creativity and richness of graduate student life. I encourage you to explore our virtual gallery and take a moment to enjoy the works of your fellow graduate colleagues this year.

On another note, The University has approached GSA to be part of an upcoming panel series focused on the student-University relationship and the broader culture of respectful academic debate. While this is a University-led initiative, GSA’s role is to make sure that graduate student perspectives are included and taken seriously.

We know that many graduate students have experienced the challenges that have strained trust with the University. Your insights, lived experience, and research place you in a strong position to help define what a more respectful and constructive culture should look like. We are especially keen to hear from graduate researchers and PhD candidates whose work relates to this area. If this resonates with you, I encourage you to share your thoughts with us so that graduate voices remain at the forefront of the conversation.

Please feel free to reach out to me at president@gsa.unimelb.edu.au

With best wishes,

Ethan Chou
