Ifrah Saeed Education (Research) Officer

Being a PhD student at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, both in full-time and part-time capacities, I understand the isolation, emotional turmoil, and financial stress, research students undergo. To provide a supporting environment to research students in my department, I helped start a social group at my department in 2019 and got it affiliated with GSA as the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Research Student Association (EEERSA) grad group in 2021. Since then, I have been an active member of the group and have served in the capacities of both vice president and general member. I have also undertaken leadership roles in other student and professional organisations, actively engaging with graduate students, to foster social interaction among peers, enhance their research and professional skills, and advocate for gender equity. As the Research Officer at GSA, I have been advocating for smooth orientation process, higher rates for travel grants, and a peer-to-peer learning space for research students at UniMelb. I look forward to continuing working closely with research students to become their voice in developing policies that help make their financially and mentally stressful research journey worthwhile.
