The 1888 building is the home of GSA and graduate student life. This beautiful heritage building can be a bit of a maze, but luckily, we have you covered with maps and lists of facilities.
Opening Hours
The 1888 Building is accessible to graduate students from 8am – 11pm, Monday to Sunday.
The GSA reception desk is open 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday.
Please note graduate students are advised to carry their student cards with them at all times when accessing the 1888 Building.

Additional information
Lockers are free and readily available for students to use in the 1888 Building. For information on how to access and use lockers, please note signage displayed at locker locations and/or contact campus security for help or additional information. Lockers are available only for one-time and will need to be reset each time you open. Please do not leave belongings in the lockers overnight as the time will expire each day at midnight.

The 1888 Building is a family-friendly environment.
We have:
- Baby changing facilities
- Two family-friendly study spaces, where you can study while your children play, which are available from 9am–5pm Monday-Friday
GSA’s Family Rooms are a dedicated space for students with children, who may need a quiet and safe place to study. The room is equipped with toys for children to play with, and plenty of desk space.
Please note, graduate students accessing these spaces must have dependents with them.
How to book:
If you would like to use one of the GSA Family Rooms you can book them via Direct Booking System (DiBS).
Alternatively you can book by emailing the GSA reception desk.
You must come collect the keys for these rooms at the GSA reception desk and return them after use. Please note, graduate students accessing these spaces must have dependents with them.

Please note: The family rooms are only available for Students with their children or dependents present.
The 1888 Building has three kitchens with microwaves, fridges, boiling water and filtered water. Use them to keep your drinks cold, make yourself some coffee or tea, or warm up your home-made meal.

The 1888 Building has several bookable small group study spaces, as well as shared study spaces and a graduate lounge
Bookable small group study space are located on the ground floor of the 1888 Building in the East Wing, they are rooms: G52, G53, and G57
Additionally there are two more bookable small group study rooms in the loft. The loft is accessible by stairs and via Lift (located near the GSA reception). It is ideal for quiet study. The bookable rooms are 201 and 208.
Small group study spaces can be booked using Direct Booking System (DiBS).
The 1888 Building has several meeting rooms available for small and large groups, for study groups or occasional private study. The meeting rooms are located on level one and are rooms 101, 102, 141 and 163. These can be booked using Direct Booking System (DiBS).
The iconic Gryphon Gallery can accommodate up to 100 people and is used for large-scale events.
Venue Management has advised that the Gryphon Gallery is not available for hire until further notice.
There are multiple shared study spaces across all floors of the 1888 building, Please check the map for locations.
The graduate lounge is on the ground floor of the building’s east wing. It’s officially a “feel free to chat” and relaxing zone.
If you cycle in to uni, or you’re exercising on campus, you can clean up in our unisex shower. It’s on the first floor of the building in room 129. From the central staircase turn right, walk past the vending machine and continue walking along the corridor. You’ll find it tucked away at the very end on the right-hand side. BYO soap, towel, etc.
Tenured study spaces (TSSs) are available in the 1888 Building for eligible graduate researchers. To be eligible you must be enrolled in a PhD, Doctorate, MPhil or Master by research course. Priority is given to graduate researchers who are in the final stages or nearing important milestones of their course.
