Message from GSA President Jeremy Waite

Tuesday 7 July 2020

On behalf of the new GSA Council, I would like to thank all those who voted in the election; I am very excited to work with this new team of dedicated and passionate councillors to represent graduate students over the next twelve months. These messages will be a way for me to communicate important developments affecting graduate students, as well as to articulate the values of GSA over the next year.

Our graduate student community is facing unprecedented challenges at the moment, and it is imperative that we rise to meet them. Graduate students no matter your course, mode of study or campus deserve to be included in what we do at GSA and this collaborative and inclusive approach is something I hope to be a defining feature of the next twelve months.

What you can expect from GSA over the coming months

Some key objectives over the coming months will include defending against proposed changes to higher education funding, developing the new electoral regulations for future GSA elections, implementing the findings from the Student Resilience Project and Parents Project, as well as continuing our advocacy and representation work with University and all other relevant stakeholders with a particular focus on international students who represent some of the most affected students by the current crisis.

Finally, one of the most important things I would like to emphasise is that my virtual door is always open. You can contact me at president@gsa.unimelb.edu.au, or to head to our website for contact details of other GSA Office Bearers.

I hope that everyone is keeping safe and well and don’t hesitate to reach out to GSA if you need any support or assistance: we are here to help you or refer you to services which can.
