LEAD 2022: Leadership Exploration and Development

What kind of leader do you want to be? 

LEAD stands for Leadership Exploration and Development and being a LEAD participant will take you on a journey of self-discovery. In a world filled with uncertainty, LEAD will help you explore the kind of leader that you want to be one day and give you the tools and strategies to achieve success. Over a 10 week period you will meet like-minded individuals, explore key leadership themes, delve deep into your reflections and those of your teammates in peer mentoring circles, and run a project to apply your learnings. LEAD is a fast paced and fully immersive program, led by an experienced leadership facilitator which will take your leadership skills to the next level.

What do you need to commit?

If you wish to be part of the LEAD journey, you need to be able to commit time and energy. Sessions are held every Monday evening for 2 hours from 5-7pm via Zoom. There is also an expectation of an additional 2-3 hours per week on reading and project content. In order to complete the program you will need to attend all sessions of the program as your commitment will be integral to the success of your group. Before applying, please ensure that the are able to commit the time needed to fully experience the program.

Key Dates

The sessions will run on Monday evenings from 5-7pm. Sessions will commence in week 4 of semester

Mon 15th August – LEAD Welcome & Induction

Mon 22nd August – Content session 1

Mon 29th August – Peer mentor circle 1

Mon 5th September – Content session 2

Mon 12th September – Peer mentor circle 2

Mon 19th September – Content session 3

Mon 26th September – Peer mentor circle 3

Mon 3rd October – Content session 4

Mon 10th October – Peer mentor circle 4

Mon 17th October –  Content session 5  

Mon 24th October – Peer mentor circle 5 & Presentations



GSA welcomes applications from any graduate student at The University of Melbourne, regardless of field of study, location, mode of study, or any other personal qualities or background. 

The main selection criteria are about knowing what your goals are and being absolutely dedicated to them. LEAD is primarily designed for people without extensive leadership experience.

We particularly encourage applications from: 

  • Graduate students who have been at the University of Melbourne for at least a year already 
  • Graduate students from low socioeconomic backgrounds 
  • Graduate students from diverse backgrounds 
  • Graduate students with limited/no leadership experience
Selection criteria 

Participants will be selected by: 

  • Capacity to attend all programmed sessions (please see dates above) 
  • Commitment to developing strong leadership skills and practices
  • Potential and desire to develop as a socially responsible leader
Application Process

Application is via completion of the online application form below. Applicants may also be contacted to set up a follow up interview if needed.


Costs are covered by The University of Melbourne. Being selected to take part in the program means you can do it for free.
