The rally outside Raymond Priestley building, 8 May

Important wins for sessional and casual staff at Melbourne Uni

On Wednesday 8 May, over 70 staff and students from the University of Melbourne gathered for a speak-out outside the Raymond Priestley building, where most of the Melbourne’s senior leadership reside.

During the rally, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) achieved a verbal agreement from the University on two out of their five demands:

  1. All casuals at Melbourne Uni will be reimbursed for their WWCC in 2019. That’s approximately 4000 casuals who are $123 better off thanks to the campaign.
  2. The University has also agreed in principle that casual employees should not have their email accounts cut off, and is actively looking for a technical solution to ensure that casual email accounts will be extended for a further three months from the termination date linked to payroll.

GSA is proud to have supported the rally in support of sessional and casual university staff, many of whom are students themselves.

Congratulations to all delegates and activists. These are great outcomes!
