Last week, the University of Melbourne branch of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) decided to take industrial action tomorrow, 9 May 2018.
This decision was taken in light of their ongoing concerns regarding the University’s bargaining position for the new staff enterprise agreement. Negotiations have been under way for over a year and tomorrow’s action reflects the Union’s dissatisfaction with many aspects of the University’s approach, including their determination to create two separate Enterprise Bargaining Agreements (thereby separating working rights for professional and academic staff members).
GSA fully supports the NTEU’s decision to take industrial action.
In doing so, we recognise that graduate students deserve to be taught by staff who are securely employed and properly compensated for their roles, within a workplace that values equity, intellectual freedom and a fair work-life balance.
We also recognise that many graduate students also hold academic or professional staff roles within the University, and their work rights must be upheld.
If your classes are cancelled tomorrow, please be understanding as to why. Message your tutors and supervisors to tell them you support them, and consider coming along to join UniMelb staff at the Change The Rules rally. They will be leaving Gate 4 of the University at 9am to head to Trades Hall and join the rest of the rally.
GSA is governed by fifteen graduate students, elected by the graduate student body. The role of the Council is to represent student interests at University, government and community levels. The Council meets at least eight times per year to discuss matters affecting graduate students and to make decisions about how GSA operates to improve graduate student life.
