Over the last 12 hours, GSA has become aware of a statement in Mandarin relating to our upcoming Special General Meeting.

As Councillors, we would like to take the time to address this statement and to call it out for its use of bullying language and scare tactics.

Of the current Councillors at GSA, around half are international students, and almost a third are Chinese students. The interests of all students, including international students, have been carefully considered through the process of developing GSA’s new constitution, and we are all proud to stand behind it.

While details surrounding GSA’s governance changes have been in the public domain for quite some time, we haven’t been able to share them as effectively with the Chinese student community as we would have liked, as we don’t have a presence on WeChat or Weibo.

For now, we have had some key information translated into Mandarin and will be making it available to those who turn up to vote at the SGM, as well as sharing it online in advance.

Rest assured, your GSA remains a student-focused organisation. We will continue to advocate for your rights and to provide services to all students – domestic and international alike.

If you wish to vote, the details of the Special General Meeting are as follows:

• Thursday 22nd March 2018
• 5:30pm
• Gryphon Gallery, 1888 Building

In order to vote in the SGM, you need to provide evidence that you’re a currently enrolled graduate student. There are two ways to do this:

  1. Show photo ID and evidence of enrolment (hard copy statement of enrolment, or active course of study on your phone)
  2. Show photo ID and sign a Statutory Declaration
Note that Statutory Declarations are legal documents, and signing them under false pretences is considered perjury. In Victoria, the offence of perjury is contained in section 314(1) of Crimes Act. It is a serious offence and carries a maximum penalty of 15 years imprisonment.

• 5:30pm
Gryphon Gallery, 1888 Building
