Grad Groups are student-led, student-run groups that have affiliated themselves with the Graduate Student Association for funding and support.

There are more than 150 Grad Groups currently affiliated with GSA.

African Studies Group (ASG)

The African Studies Group is a postgraduate student-led discussion group at the School of Social and Political Sciences. It is open to both students and staff whose research interests and activities are either focused on Africa or have relevance to African studies. The study group critically engages with issues such as colonialism, politics, development, conflicts, land dispossession, extraction of natural resources, gender and governance in Africa among others. It is a platform for student socialising, cohort building, support and sharing varying experiences.

Asian Institute Postgraduate Group (AIPG)

The Asia Institute Postgraduate Group supports postgraduate students researching Asia or the Middle East/ Islamic Studies at the University of Melbourne. It aims to foster connections and encourage collaboration between students based in the Asia Institute and in other faculties and disciplines. Australian Medical Sign Language Associaton (AMSLA)

Australian Medical Sign Language Association (AMSLA) aims to educate health professionals in Auslan to bridge the communication gap between the Deaf and the hearing in the health care setting. Ausdroid

Ausdroid was founded in 2017 and focuses on designing fully functioning and autonomous robots. Our group gathers students who are passionate about AI and robotic to compete in the DJI RoboMaster AI Challenge which is an international robotics competition held each year.

Our group focuses on the understanding and the use of artificial intelligence, as well as hardware knowledge. We foster close collaborations between robotic algorithms and designing robots to enable practice on real and simulated robotic systems. We will hold weekly workshops to enhance the understanding of robotic knowledge. We cover a range of areas includes: hardware, computer vision, AI, Simulation and Navigation. Outstanding members will have the chance to participate in future worldwide competitions. We welcome students who have experiences or are passionate about robotics to join our group.

Australian Students’ Society of Haematology (ASSH)

ASSH is a student interest group that aims to enhance the knowledge of graduate students in important topics in haematology, and encourage them to explore the whole gamut of possible careers in haematology, all of which carry the potential to create extraordinary impact. Bengali Cultural Club (BCC)

University of Melbourne comprises of students from all over the world and it was interesting to find a significant number from West Bengal and Bangladesh. Once during a discussion over coffee, many of them wanted to stay connected to their roots in some way while learning the ways of the modern world. Hence we came up with the idea of a common platform for gathering, discussion and celebration of unique and rich Bengali culture, something we miss and yearn for in a vibrant city like Melbourne.

Enable Prosthetics Melbourne

Enable Prosthetics Melbourne is a chapter of the global ‘Enable’ organisation, a movement that utilises 3D printing to design an synthesise free prosthetics for the disabled. Ethnoforum

We are a graduate student group based in the School of Social and Political Sciences. We welcome all individuals using ethnography as a methodology and those interested in learning more about ethnographic research. We strive to enhance the academic and professional life of graduate students at the University of Melbourne who study ethnography, to provide academic support to fellow graduates and thus foster communication of research ideas and collaborations, and to promote interaction, welfare and cohesion between graduate students.

We have been functioning for approximately ten years as a student-led group that also gives PhD students the opportunity to share their research with other PhD candidates. Under the supervision of Dr. Monica Minnegal, this club is one of the few places where PhD and master’s students conducting ethnography can have open and in-depth discourse about issues and experiences before, during, and after completing their fieldwork.

Typically, Ethnoforum meets eight times per year on the second Friday of each month. We are recognized and supported by the academics in the department, and often academics come to the events to learn about and engage with student research. Over the coming semester, our events include discussions on ethnography in conflict areas, conducting ethnography within bureaucracy, Ethnography in Australia, and language and Ethnography.

Folding Our Futures (FOF)

Folding Our Futures provides university students opportunities to engage with the greater community through working on social impact projects together with secondary students in rural or disadvantaged regions in Victoria. International Graduate Student Wellbeing Group (IGSWG)

The International Graduate Student Well-being Group (IGSWG) aims to support graduate international students by looking after their health and well-being. We believe that moving to a new country to study can be challenging and we want to support the student’s physical and mental well-being. By working and inviting health care professionals, we aim to educate members to increase their familiarity with the health care system and better utilise care and support when needed. The group also want to increase awareness of well-being issues such as mental health and stress, thus educating ways to prevent, recognise and deal with these issues. As a society, we also want to provide a platform for international graduate students to promote interaction and cohesion, in the hope to provide social networks to support students’ well-being. Surgical Students’ Society of Melbourne (SSSM)

The Surgical Students’ Society of Melbourne (SSSM) is the peak surgical interest group at the University of Melbourne, Melbourne Medical School. The SSSM is a not-for-profit organisation run by current Doctor of Medicine candidates that represents over 1,400 students across seven clinical school sites in metropolitan Melbourne and rural Victoria.

The mission of the society relates to three domains. These include:
