Introduction to NVivo 11

Learn how to use NVivo, the world’s leading program for qualitative data analysis.

NVivo provides a set of advanced coding tools for qualitative data analysis. Learn how to make your research experience better by navigating, coding, queering and visualising your messy research materials and save time in generating high-quality research.

This is the only comprehensive on-site training course for NVivo on campus at the University of Melbourne. In this introductory course split into two sessions, you will learn all the basic NVivo skills you need to get started. The course is run in the ERC Learning studio at Parkville with Windows computers, so there is no need to bring your own laptop, unless you want to follow along using Mac.

Who should attend:
The workshop assumes basic computer skills, but no prior knowledge of NVivo. It also assumes that participants have some knowledge of qualitative methods, but does not follow any particular methodological path. The approach is hands-on with some flexibility in what we cover according to needs. The workshop will be geared to Windows users but Mac users could bring their own machines and will find relatively little difference between the functions covered.

How the course will run:
The course is split into two 2.5 hour sessions, and will take place according to the following times:

• Monday 26 March @ ERC e-learning studio 5pm-7.30pm
• Wednesday 28 March @ ERC e-learning studio 5pm-7.30pm

Materials:
The course is best taken when you have your data and are ready to code it, but the course offers practical learning and a handbook is provided. There’s no need to bring your own data as a training set will be provided.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the two introduction sessions participants will be familiar with the basic architecture of NVivo and able to:

• Create a project within NVivo
• Set up a system for managing their project items
• Create documents within their project
• Import and manage sources
• Code sources
• Create and manage a coding structure
• Create classifications and attributes
• Understand and use links, especially memos and annotation

Your presenter:
Helen Marshall learned how to wrestle with qualitative data during her PhD. Her supervisor, Lyn Richards was the co-creator of NVivo software.  Helen has used NVivo in research projects since its inception.  She has worked with researchers using the software in faculties as disparate as Social Science, and Forestry. On retiring from her teaching position in 2006, she became an associate of RMIT’s Centre for Applied social Research. There she has continued to use NVivo in her own research, trained NVivo users and acted as consultant on projects, while  running training workshops at  universities including Melbourne, Victoria University, Deakin and RMIT and at institutions like Peter MacCallum clinic and the Brotherhood of St Laurence. She convenes the Qualitative interest Group (QIG) a loose collection of people interested in qualitative research of all kinds that  meets at RMIT on the first Tuesday of each month for conversation around a pre-set topic concerned with  the joys and woes of qualitative research.
