Workshop 3: Beginners Watercolour Painting
Painting: Towards a feeling response
Learn about all aspects of watercolour technique – colour mixes, intensity and washes, composition and drawing – by creating small, simple paintings. Experiment with materials and the medium, in this fun and easy-going workshop.
This class will teach you the fundamental skills in painting with watercolour and demonstrate steps of planning, drawing, timing and incorporating figures into a landscape and making of an artwork.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this workshop, you will:
- Become familiar with the medium and watercolour techniques
- Be able to plan an approach and method to complete a painting
- Create fresh and lively paintings.
Materials
Colours
- At least one of each of the bright primary colours of red, yellow and blue and black
- Your preference of the type or brand of watercolour to use in this class. This can be wet-based tube paint, dry-cake or liquid-based.
Paper
- Watercolour paper is advised (cotton derived and acid-free) – the thicker the better. Best values are to buy loose sheets (not blocks or pads).
- Purchase both rough and smooth texture paper as this will provide for the different paintings you will create.
Brushes
- 1 large soft round brush
- 1 small soft round brush
Palette
- The larger the palette the better for mixing colour. Square shapes with many compartments are ideal
About the Artist
Nila Shekarvand
With over ten years professional experience as a Visual Artist, Designer and Educator in various creative environments, Nila is well versed in delivering creative workshops to individuals of all skill levels.
Nila is undertaking her Masters in Contemporary Art with the VCA (Victorian College of the Arts) under the supervision of Dr Celeste Chandler (Head of Breadth Visual Art program). Nila’s project involves drawing and painting a collection of portraits of inspirational female figures.
