Workshop 3: Beginners Watercolour Painting

Painting: Towards a feeling response

Learn about all aspects of watercolour technique – colour mixes, intensity and washes, composition and drawing – by creating small, simple paintings. Experiment with materials and the medium, in this fun and easy-going workshop.

This class will teach you the fundamental skills in painting with watercolour and demonstrate steps of planning, drawing, timing and incorporating figures into a landscape and making of an artwork.

Workshop 3: Friday 16 April 2021, 4.30pm – 6pm
Duration: 90 mins
Knowledge Required: Beginner-friendly

Learning outcomes

At the end of this workshop, you will:

  • Become familiar with the medium and watercolour techniques
  • Be able to plan an approach and method to complete a painting
  • Create fresh and lively paintings.

Materials

Colours

  •  At least one of each of the bright primary colours of red, yellow and blue and black
  • Your preference of the type or brand of watercolour to use in this class. This can be wet-based tube paint, dry-cake or liquid-based.

Paper

  • Watercolour paper is advised (cotton derived and acid-free) – the thicker the better. Best values are to buy loose sheets (not blocks or pads).
  • Purchase both rough and smooth texture paper as this will provide for the different paintings you will create.

Brushes

  • 1 large soft round brush
  • 1 small soft round brush

Palette

  • The larger the palette the better for mixing colour. Square shapes with many compartments are ideal
