It is monumental news for those ineligible for Medicare, such as our international graduate student community. After numerous years of lobbying, the Federal Government has agreed to cover the costs of the prohibitively expensive medications used to treat HIV. The expense has been one of the main barriers to access and treatment for those who don’t have Medicare, and with these changes there is now an equitable opportunity for international students to obtain effective HIV treatment. As a NAPWHA (The National Association of People with HIV Australia) staff member said to one of our councillors – “this is a milestone”.
